Spiritual Emergence Anonymous: A 12-Step Program for the Integration of Spiritual Emergence

by David Sunfellow

A grassroots 12-Step program has recently been launched to assist in the integration of spiritual emergence (SE) and spiritually transformative experiences (STEs), based upon the principals and ethics of the original Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) 12-Step program. The purpose of Spiritual Emergence Anonymous (SEA) is to help support the integration of SE and STEs in individuals whose spiritual transformation is so powerful that they desire assistance and support within a group environment. SEA offers the potential to serve ‘STErs’ worldwide through online meetings until local chapters can flourish. We are ever-forming and transforming, welcoming the dynamic growth of this organization as more people join and help shape the endeavor.

Religious Figures In NDEs, Especially Muhammad & Jesus

by David Sunfellow

David Sunfellow asks: “I’m wondering if you have come across any NDEs that feature Muhammad as a central figure greeting NDErs? I had a reader recently ask me this question, and I could only think of one NDE where Muhammad showed up. And he didn’t show up as a greeting presence like Jesus often does, […]

The Other Side Of Paradise: How I Left A Buddhist Retreat In Handcuffs

by David Sunfellow

The police stayed calm and the Buddhists were calmer, but by then there wasn’t much anyone could do. In the hours previously, I had come to believe, simultaneously and sequentially, that I was: dead, alive, omniscient, immortal, non-existent, gay, straight, telepathic, a flower, a pulse of pure energy and a nuclear bomb. And that was the good part, relatively speaking. By the time I was handcuffed and led to an ambulance, my troubles, or at least this episode among them, were just underway…

There Are No Easy Answers

by David Sunfellow

“I’m sorry. There are no easy answers. If we want to understand what NDEs are about, we have to learn how to swim in waters that are deeply disturbing to ordinary human sensibilities. And that takes time, patience, and effort. And a whole new set of skills that are completely alien to normal, every day life.”

Regrets Of The Dying

by David Sunfellow

My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives. When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five…

At The End Of Her Life, My Mother Started Seeing Ghosts

by David Sunfellow

Last summer, six months before my mother died, I walked into her bedroom, and she greeted me with tinny hello and a big smile. She then resumed a conversation with her mother — who had died in 1973. “Where are you?” Mom asked, as though Grandma, a onetime Fifth Avenue milliner, was on one of her many European hat-buying junkets. As I stood there dumbstruck, Mom continued chatting — in a young girl’s voice, no less — for several more minutes. Was this a reaction to medication, a sign of advancing dementia? Or was she preparing to “transition” to wherever she was going next?

Regardless, Mom was freaking me out — as well as my brother, sister and father.

As it turned out, my mother’s chat with a ghost was a signal that the end was inching closer. Those who work with the terminally ill, such as social workers and hospice caregivers, call these episodes or visions a manifestation of what is called Nearing Death Awareness.

The Ego Is Alive & Well Upon Returning From An NDE

by David Sunfellow

“I learned the ego is alive and well upon returning from an NDE. It may have settled down its fervor for wanting what it wants, but for the most part, the ego is still there. When back in the physical plane with the ability to think and have free-will, ego-centred behaviour may return and old behaviour patterns become active once again. Impatience, lack of trust, judgement and all other ego-centered behaviours are just reminding us of perhaps the one big reason people return from an NDE; that is, because there is still much to learn. Those things not yet completed at the time of the NDE are still there. Along with all of the gifts and special talents, this may be the biggest lesson of all from the light. There are still things to be done. There are attachments to become detached from. There are still steps to be taken to learn what the physical world has yet to teach; otherwise, returning would not have been an option.”
